Top Dog Walks: Peak District National Park

The Peak District National Park is located in the centre of England. Steep limestone valleys such as Dovedale, characterise the park's southern area, which is known as White Peak. The North area of the Peak District is known as Dark Peak, holding dramatic gritstone ridges and stark moorland plateaus such as Kinder Scout, the highest point in the National Park. The area holds a variety of excellent and varied dog walking opportunities, for you and your canine companion to enjoy.

Here, we take a look at four of our favourite dog walks in the Peak District National Park, which you can enjoy yourselves.

Milldale

This is an excellent, linear walk at Milldale, following the River Dove. Starting in Milldale, you cross the river, tracing its path to Dovedale. Along the route, you will encounter stunning scenery, including shallow caves and woodland. Wildflowers grow during the summer months, and you may see a number of sheep grazing along strethes of the walk, so keep you dog on their lead if they are liable to give chase!

Curbar Edge

Walk link: here

This is a fantastic walk offering some stunning views and interesting scenery. It's dog friendly, allowing your canine companion to experience and explore a wide variety of paths with you. Bring a camera and binoculars to make the most of the views, and wrap up warm if venturing out in the colder months.

Chatsworth Park

Walk link: here

This circular walk through Chatsworth Park encompasses sights of Chatsworth House, walking along the waters edge of the River Derwent, and up through the small village of Edensor. The 1,000-acre park is ideal to stroll around and relax with your dog. If you're looking for a dog walk with water and vast grass areas, this is for you.

Bakewell and the Monsal Trail

Walk link: here

Bakewell is a well-loved market town offering a mixture of fantastic footpaths and trails to explore. The Monsal Trail itself is a cycling, horse riding and walking trail in the Derbyshire Peak District, and offers a great easy to walk route for you and your dog. It was constructed from a section of the former Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway, which closed in 1968. This walk introduces you to it at an entry point in Bakewell.

What is great about the Peak District, being so central, is the accessibility it has to a large part of England. Whether you are in Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, Nottingham or Derby - the Peak District is arguably just on your door-step, a short car ride away. It really is a great place to get outdoors and explore some wonderful scenery, to make some truly memorable walks with your dog.
