A once predominately industrial city with a manufacturing past, today Liverpool is known for its art and music. There are a number of free museums and parks to explore, along with a number of attractions.
Getting There
By train – only 2 hours 13 minutes from Central London, there are a number of train operators serving the city from all other major UK cities. By car – well-connected to the motorway network in the UK, from the M6 you can take the M62, M58 or M56.
Things to do
Albert Dock
Arguably the biggest tourist attraction in Liverpool, Albert Dock consists of dock buildings and warehouses. It was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone – with no structural wood. Here, you will find several museums, bars and restaurants to keep you entertained.
International Slavery Museum
Showcasing the impact which slavery had on Liverpool and the wider world, this museum presents a detailed picture of how the city grew in prominence at this time.
Liverpool Cathedral
Britain’s largest church and one of the finest examples in the world of Gothic architecture. You can climb the tower for a view across the city and further afield, with a clear day lending sight to Blackpool Tower.
The Beatles Story
A totally Beatles-themed museum, here you will find an exploration of music history related to the band. Instruments and items are displayed here.
St. George’s Hall
An imposing example of neoclassical architecture, this is a prime example of Liverpudlian history and one of Liverpool’s most impressive buildings, completed in 1854. It was built as both law courts and a concert hall, the latter of which it is still used for today.
World Museum
This museum is, like the others, free to enter. It contains a large amount of exhibits.
Walker Art Gallery
This art gallery houses an outstanding collection of art from the 14th to the 21st centuries. It is the national gallery for northern England, and well-worth a visit.
Merseyside Maritime Museum
This museum details the story of 9 million emigrants and their attempts to reach Australia and North America.
