The historic market town of Otley in the Wharfe Valley features the Chevin, a popular dog-walking spot. The Chevin has some spectacular views with plenty of luscious woodland and heathland. The highest point of the Chevin, and this walks start point, is Surprise View which reaches 282 metres and has some incredible views of Otley and Wharfedale.

How to get there

Chevin Forest Park is in the Wharfe Valley, on either side of East Chevin Road, Otley. It is 10 miles north-west of Leeds city centre.

Walk

1 Starting from Surprise View, turn to your right and head along the path from the car park, walking east. Follow the path until it reaches East Chevin Road. Do not cross the road, instead walking beside the road and down the hill past Danefield House before heading in to the left and heading west along the track running parallel to the one you started on.

2 Follow the path heading west for a mile or so, heading through the woodland.

3 The lower path will end and you can turn left to climb uphill towards Woodland Farm. Do not go to the farm, instead remain in the woodland. Walk past some large rocks and head east on the path near the stone wall to Yorkgate Quarry.

4 From Chevin Forest Nature Reserve, continue east back to Surprise View.
