A circular walk amongst the trees and around the edge of the water’s edge of the tarn.

How to get there

From Ambleside, take the B5286 to Hawkshead, following the signs to Hawkshead Hill, the signs for Tarn Hows.

Walk

1. Starting at the car park, take the left path. Upon reaching the road, head onto the path to Tarn Hows, opposite the car park. Head down this path, heading to the left then right, heading toward the lake. When you reach the water, pass through the gate and progress ahead on the path. You will walk through the woods, keeping the tarn to your right. Ignore any paths heading off to your left, remaining instead alongside the lake and water’s edge. As you head round the top section of the lake, you will cross over a footbridge.

2. Continue on the path, ignoring any paths to your left once again. Pass on through a gate, then take the path to your right, then to your left across the hillside. When you reach the rock on the top of the hill, you can head back along the path to your left, back toward the car park.
