A circular dog friendly walk from Winsley. Part of the walk runs by the Kennet & Avon Canal and is close to the River Avon and Avoncliff Station. The walk passes over the Avoncliff Aqueduct, which was built by John Rennie and John Thomas, between 1797 and 1801.
How to get there
From Bath, take the A36 Warminster Road, heading south. Take a left at the B3108 at a traffic light junction, signposted 'Bradford-on-Avon' and 'Winsley'. Remain on this road until you reach a small road sign pointing right toward 'Murhill', take this narrow lane until you reach a car park on your right.
Walk
1 From the car park, turn right when facing the road. Then turn right again. Head down the steps and down the road. The road will turn into a path running between some trees before you reach the Kennet and Avon Canal. Continue to head alongside the canal to reach the canal bridge.
2 Cross over the canal bridge and turn left to continue on the canal towpath. After a short while you will cross over a railway bridge and then the Avoncliff Aqueduct. Go down the steps on your right after crossing and continue under the arch of the aqueduct. Head on northward by a car park and go straight ahead on a path leading through the woodland.
3 Go up some steps and through a gate before continuing on the path. Turn left at the end of the field and walk along the edge of the field. Cross a track from the corner of the field and go on straight ahead.
4 Take the footpath on your left and before a bend in the road. Remain on the path and when you reach the end, go down some steps. Go straight ahead on the path and at the end turn right onto the road and go on through the village of Winsley. Turn left at the end of the road to head back to the car park.
