When Mahlow joined our family in 2019, we faced a new set of challenges. He is a 40kg ex-racer and a gentle soul, but he is also anxious and reactive. He pretends he’s braver than he is, often barking at other dogs. This made walks stressful, and we felt the familiar sting of embarrassment, especially when faced with the dreaded "don't worry, he's friendly!" as an off-leash dog charged towards us.
Suddenly, our needs for a walk became much more specific. We needed routes with secure parking, good visibility to avoid surprises, and minimal stiles (lifting a 40kg dog is a workout we'd rather avoid!). Mahlow's fear of heights meant bridges with gaps were out, and his initial claustrophobia made kissing gates a huge challenge.
We tried everything: hours of googling, scanning maps, and trying other websites. But the information was always scattered, inconsistent, or not detailed enough.
