Terrain:

The terrain for the Slieve Donard walk in County Down is very challenging and strenuous. Lower sections through Donard Forest are on good, albeit often steep, paths. Higher up, once out of the forest, paths become increasingly steep, rocky, uneven, and can be very boggy and eroded in places, particularly on the ascent to the Saddle and the final push to the summit. The summit plateau is a broad, stony area. The mountain is very exposed to rapidly changing and often severe weather conditions (wind, rain, low cloud). Strong, sturdy, waterproof mountain boots are absolutely essential, as are full waterproofs, extra layers, a map, compass/GPS, and emergency supplies. This County Down mountain is a serious undertaking.

Dog Notes:

Climbing Slieve Donard in County Down is suitable only for very fit, agile, and experienced mountain-walking dogs that are accustomed to challenging and rugged terrain. The ground underfoot can be extremely tough on paws (sharp rocks, boulders, boggy sections). Dogs MUST be kept on leads or under very close and reliable control at all times due to steep drops, unpredictable weather, and the frequent presence of sheep grazing freely on the mountainsides. This is a very strenuous and long day for a dog. Ensure your dog is capable of such a climb and carry plenty of water and some food for them. This is not a casual dog walk on this County Down peak; assess your dog's fitness and the conditions carefully.
