The terrain at Northam Burrows and Westward Ho! in Devon is varied. Paths on Northam Burrows are predominantly grassy or sandy, and can be uneven and become wet or boggy in places, especially after rain or in lower-lying areas. There are some boardwalks over particularly marshier sections. The area is mostly flat but very exposed to coastal weather. This Devon walk has diverse but generally level surfaces.

Northam Burrows and Westward Ho! beach in Devon are generally very dog-friendly, offering fantastic open spaces. Westward Ho! beach allows dogs year-round on most of its length, though there is usually a small restricted zone near the main village access (the "Blue Flag" section) during the peak summer season (typically 1st May to 30th September – always check local Torridge District Council signage for current rules and clearly marked zoned areas). Northam Burrows is excellent for off-lead dog walking, but dogs MUST be kept under close and effective control due to the presence of free-roaming sheep and horses, and to protect ground-nesting birds (especially during March-July, when dogs should be kept to main paths). Please clean up after your dog. This Devon location is a dog walker's paradise with responsible ownership.
