- Dog Notes:
- Leads: The Kennet & Avon Canal towpath is extremely popular with dog walkers. It offers long stretches of traffic-free walking. Off-lead is common, provided dogs have excellent recall and do not bother other towpath users (walkers, cyclists, anglers), jump into the canal unexpectedly, or disturb wildlife (ducks, swans, moorhens are abundant). Be prepared to put your dog on a lead when passing through busy areas (like Newbury Wharf), near locks, or when approaching other dogs or people.
- Water: The canal itself. Many dogs enjoy a paddle or swim, but be aware of boats, fishing lines, and water quality (which can vary). Ensure there are safe and easy exit points, as canal banks can be steep and slippery. Carry fresh water for drinking.
- Wildlife: Lots of waterfowl. Ensure dogs do not chase them. Kingfishers are sometimes spotted.
- Dog Bins: Usually well-provided at popular access points like Newbury Wharf, near locks, and in towns/villages along the canal.
- Hazards: Boats (moving and moored), cyclists (can approach quietly – teach dogs to stay to one side), fishing lines, deep water in the canal and locks.
