Dog Considerations:

  • Leads: Lyme Park is a vast estate with a large herd of red and fallow deer, as well as sheep grazing in many areas. **Dogs MUST be kept on short leads at all times in all areas of the park where deer or livestock are present, which includes most of the open deer park and moorland.** This is a strict National Trust rule for wildlife and livestock welfare. Within the formal gardens, dogs are usually required to be on short leads. Some very specific, designated "off-lead zones" *may* exist seasonally or in limited areas away from deer/stock – check Lyme Park's specific dog policy map on arrival or on the NT website. Do not assume off-lead is generally permitted.
  • Water: Some streams and ponds exist in the wider parkland. The lake in the formal gardens. Carry fresh water, especially for longer/higher walks. Water bowls often at cafes.
  • Wildlife & Livestock: Large herds of red and fallow deer, sheep, Highland cattle. Also, woodland birds, moorland birds. Strict control of dogs is paramount.
  • Dog Bins: Plentifully available around the main visitor areas (house, gardens, cafes, car parks). Less frequent in the remote deer park/moorland.
  • Hazards: Deer (can be unpredictable, especially stags during the rut or hinds with calves). Sheep. Steep slopes. Uneven/boggy ground on moorland. Ticks are common. Can be very busy.
