Upgrade to PLUSStarting Point: Dale Abbey village, near the Carpenters Arms pub or the Abbey ruins (Postcode: DE7 4PN is for Dale Abbey village).
Approximate Distance: 3 - 4 miles (4.8 - 6.4 km) for a typical circular walk exploring the village, abbey ruins, Hermit's Cave, and surrounding countryside.
Estimated Time: 1.5 - 2 hours, allowing time to explore the historical features.
Walk Description:
1. From Dale Abbey Village: Start your walk in the historic village of Dale Abbey. Take some time to admire the unique All Saints Church, which is partly built into the old abbey gatehouse, and the impressive standing arch of the former Augustinian priory.
2. Towards the Hermit's Cave: Follow public footpaths leading out of the village, often signposted or indicated on local walking guides. A key feature to include is the Hermit's Cave (or Hermitage), a small cave carved into the sandstone cliff, reputedly once home to a 12th-century Derby baker turned hermit.
3. Woodland and Countryside Paths: The route will typically take you through pleasant sections of woodland (like Ockbrook Wood or Dale Abbey Wood) and across agricultural fields, offering lovely views of the Derbyshire countryside.
4. Circular Route: The paths form a natural loop, often involving a gentle climb to the ridge where the Hermit's Cave is located, and then a descent back towards the village, possibly via a different set of fields or woodland tracks.
5. Return to the Village: Conclude your walk back in Dale Abbey, perhaps enjoying refreshments at the local pub.
Highlights:
- The unique and historic Dale Abbey ruins and the church within the gatehouse.
- Visiting the intriguing Hermit's Cave.
- Pleasant walking through mixed woodland and rolling Derbyshire farmland.
- Good views from the higher points of the walk.
- A sense of peace and history in a charming village setting.
