Dog Considerations:

  • Leads: This is open hill country where livestock (sheep, possibly cattle) are likely to be grazing freely. Dogs **MUST be kept on leads or under extremely close and reliable control at all times** to prevent any worrying of livestock. This is crucial. During bird nesting season (April-July), keeping dogs on paths/leads is also vital to protect ground-nesting birds like curlew or skylark.
  • Water: Natural water sources like burns (streams) or bog pools may be present, but water can be peaty or host parasites. It is essential to carry plenty of fresh water for your dog, especially on a hill climb.
  • Wildlife & Livestock: Sheep are almost certain. Also upland birds, potentially deer, foxes, hares. Strict control of dogs is vital.
  • Dog Bins: Absolutely none. You **MUST** take all dog waste home with you, adhering to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
  • Hazards: Livestock, very boggy ground (risk of dog getting stuck or very dirty), hidden holes, potentially sudden weather changes (mist, wind, rain), adders in summer (though less common than some southern heaths), ticks. This is a challenging environment for dogs not accustomed to hill walking.
  • Stamina: Only suitable for fit dogs with good stamina, used to rough terrain and hill climbing.
