The Dog Walking Experience at Bernwood Forest
Get ready for wagging tails and happy panting! Bernwood Forest offers a wonderful network of trails that are perfect for dogs of all shapes and sizes.
- Trail Variety: You'll find a mix of well-defined paths, wider rides, and more rustic woodland tracks. Surfaces can vary, with some areas becoming muddy, especially during wetter months, so appropriate footwear for you (and perhaps a towel for your dog!) is recommended.
- Canine Freedom & Responsibility: Dogs are very welcome in Bernwood Forest. Forestry England advises to keep your dog in sight and under control. It's best to use a lead if your dog's recall isn't perfect, or when approaching other walkers, cyclists, or horse riders. While some areas may feel suitable for off-lead exploration for well-behaved dogs, always be prepared to leash your dog if necessary, particularly in areas managed for wildlife. And, of course, always pick up after your dog – please take dog waste home if bins are not available or are full.
- Sensory Heaven: With a rich undergrowth, ancient trees, and plenty of wildlife scents (though please discourage chasing!), your dog will be in sensory heaven. The varied woodland also provides ample shade on warmer days.
- Wildlife Spotting: While your dog explores, keep an eye out for the incredible array of butterflies, especially during the summer months. You might also spot various bird species and other woodland creatures.
Suggested Walks for You and Your Pooch
Bernwood Forest offers flexibility for short strolls or longer adventures:
- The Butterfly Trail (Approx. 2 miles / 3.2 km): This waymarked circular trail is an excellent introduction to the forest. It's a relatively easy walk, guiding you through diverse habitats and offering the best chances to spot some of Bernwood's famed butterflies. Perfect for a leisurely exploration with your furry friend.
- Exploring Deeper (Variable Lengths): For those wanting a longer adventure, Bernwood Forest has a wider network of paths and rides. You can pick up sections of the longer Bernwood Jubilee Way which passes through the forest, or simply create your own loop. The grid-like structure of some of the paths makes it relatively easy to tailor your walk to your desired length and difficulty.
