Dog Considerations:

  • Leads: The Goyt Valley is a popular SSSI with grazing livestock (sheep) on moorland fringes and important wildlife. On main reservoir paths/tracks, especially when busy, near picnic areas, or when cyclists/horse riders are present (on permitted routes), leads are strongly advisable. In wider woodlands *away* from main paths and livestock, well-behaved dogs with excellent recall *might* have some off-lead time, but always be prepared to re-lead instantly. **On any open moorland or fields with sheep, dogs MUST be on leads.**
  • Water: Reservoirs (drinking water supply – dog swimming discouraged/prohibited). River Goyt and feeder streams offer paddling (peaty water). Carry fresh water, especially for longer walks.
  • Wildlife & Livestock: Sheep. Woodland birds (pied flycatchers, redstarts in summer), waterfowl, potentially deer. Strict control of dogs needed.
  • Dog Bins: Usually available at main car parks (Derbyshire Bridge, Errwood Hall, Fernilee, Bunsal Cob). Unlikely on paths themselves. Take waste home.
  • Hazards: Livestock. Deep water in reservoirs. Steep, slippery paths. Ruins of Errwood Hall. Ticks. Weather changes quickly. Limited mobile signal.
