Featured Walk: Kinver Edge Hillfort & Rock Houses Trail

This popular walk offers a wonderful taste of Kinver Edge's diverse scenery and unique heritage, with plenty of opportunities for your dog to explore.

  • Approx. Distance: 2.5 - 4 miles (4-6.5 km), with options to shorten or extend.
  • Estimated Time: 1.5 - 3 hours, depending on your pace and how much you explore the points of interest.
  • Starting Point: There are two main National Trust car parks:
    • Compton Road Car Park (DY7 5NP approx. for satnav): This larger car park provides good access to the wider heathland and woodland paths, and the Hillfort. National Trust members park free; pay and display for non-members.
    • Rock Houses Car Park (DY7 6DL approx. for satnav): Situated closer to the famous Rock Houses and Holy Austin Rock. This car park is smaller. National Trust members park free; pay and display for non-members.
  • Dog-Friendly Highlights:
    • Extensive Path Network: Miles of tracks and paths crisscross the Edge, offering endless sniffing opportunities and space for dogs to stretch their legs.
    • Varied Environments: From shady woodlands to open heathland, your dog will love the changing scents and scenery.
  • Points of Interest:
    • Kinver Edge Hillfort: An impressive Iron Age fort with commanding views across the surrounding counties. Great for a breezy run-around.
    • Nanny's Rock & Vale's Rock: Prominent sandstone outcrops offering more fantastic views.
    • The Rock Houses (National Trust): While dogs aren't allowed inside the restored houses themselves (except assistance dogs), the area around them is fascinating to explore, and it gives a glimpse into the lives of people who once carved homes into the rock. The tea room here often has dog-friendly outdoor seating.
    • Beautiful Views: On a clear day, you can see for miles, with vistas stretching towards the Malvern Hills, Shropshire Hills, and even the Black Country.

Route Outline (Example from Compton Road Car Park):

  1. From the Compton Road car park, take one of the main paths leading up onto the Edge. Signage is generally good, often indicating routes towards the Hillfort or Rock Houses.
  2. Follow trails heading towards the prominent Hillfort. Explore the earthworks and enjoy the panoramic views.
  3. From the Hillfort, you can pick up paths that meander through woodland and heathland. You might choose to head towards Nanny's Rock or create a loop through the diverse habitats.
  4. For a longer walk incorporating the Rock Houses, follow signs leading you through the woodland. Be prepared for some steeper sections and steps as you approach this area.
  5. After exploring the vicinity of the Rock Houses (perhaps stopping for a refreshment at the tea room if open and offering outdoor seating), you can loop back through different woodland or heathland paths towards the Compton Road car park.

Doggy Considerations:

  • Livestock: While less common directly on the main walking paths of the Edge itself, be aware that livestock may graze in adjacent areas or on wider heathland commons. Always be prepared to put your dog on a lead if livestock are present.
  • Wildlife: Kinver Edge is rich in wildlife. Please keep your dog under control, especially on the heathland during bird nesting season (typically March-August) to protect ground-nesting birds like nightjars.
  • Sandy Paths: The sandy soil is great for dogs' paws but can mean sandy cars and homes afterwards!
  • Dog Bins: Dog waste bins are usually available at the main car parks and sometimes near the Rock Houses. However, it's always best to come prepared with your own poo bags and be ready to take them home if necessary.
  • Refreshments: The National Trust tea room at the Rock Houses often has dog-friendly outdoor seating and water bowls. The nearby village of Kinver also has several dog-friendly pubs and cafes. It's always a good idea to check current policies before your visit. Bring fresh water for your dog, especially on warmer days or longer walks.

Extend Your Adventure:

  • Canal Towpaths: The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal runs near Kinver village, offering pleasant, flat towpath walks if you want to add a different type of scenery to your day.

Kinver Edge is a gem in Staffordshire, offering a fantastic natural playground for dogs and their owners. With its unique blend of history, geology, and beautiful landscapes, it's a place you'll want to return to time and time again. Enjoy your exploration!
