Terrain:

The terrain on Beckhampton Gallops in Wiltshire is open chalk downland. Paths are predominantly grassy and can be uneven, rutted (especially on the gallops themselves which are regularly used by horses), and become very slippery when wet or frosty due to the underlying chalk. The area is very exposed to the weather. Sturdy footwear with good grip is essential for this Wiltshire walk. Be aware that the gallops are working training grounds and access may be managed accordingly.
