Perfect for: Dogs who love varied terrain, coastal breezes, and a good explore. Ideal for walkers seeking stunning views, historical intrigue, and a choice of routes from gentle strolls to more energetic hikes.

Discover the wild beauty of Hengistbury Head, a spectacular headland offering a fantastic day out for you and your four-legged friend. This internationally important site boasts a unique combination of habitats, including woodland, heathland, freshwater wetland, saltmarsh, and dramatic coastline, ensuring a walk here is always an adventure.

The Walk:
Hengistbury Head provides a wonderful network of paths to explore. You can choose your own adventure, but popular options include:

  • The Coastal Path to Mudeford Sandbank: Enjoy breathtaking views across the harbour and Isle of Wight as you head towards the iconic, colourful beach huts of Mudeford Sandbank. The paths are generally well-maintained. You can make this a circular walk by returning via the inner harbour side or along the beach.
  • Warren Hill Circular: Climb to the summit of Warren Hill (the highest point of the headland) for panoramic 360-degree views. This route takes you through beautiful heathland, rich in wildlife and archaeological sites, including the Iron Age ramparts.
  • Woodland Wanders: Explore the cooler, shaded paths through the woodland areas, offering a different sensory experience for your dog.
  • Accessible Routes: Some paths, particularly from the main car park towards the beach and along parts of the spit, are surfaced and suitable for buggies or those preferring a flatter, easier walk.

Walks can range from a short 1-2 mile stroll to a longer 3-5 mile hike, depending on your chosen route and energy levels. The terrain varies from sandy tracks and beach sections to grassy paths and some gentle inclines.
