Seasonal Advice:

This walk is enjoyable year-round, with spring and summer offering the best conditions along the canal. In wetter months, sections of the towpath can become muddy and slippery, particularly after prolonged rain. The area around the locks can also be busier during weekends and holidays, so quieter visits are best early in the morning or on weekdays.

Foxton Locks are ten canal locks, with two ‘staircases’ each of five locks, located on the Leicestershire line of the Grand Union Canal.

How to get there

Foxton Locks is located south of the city of Leicester and close to Market Harborough.

Walk

1 Begin the walk on North Lane in Foxton and follow the footpath signpost to head along the canal towpath, heading away from the village. After passing the flight of locks opposite, you will need to cross a footbridge, then take a left turn to take the path up the side of the locks.

2 Take the path heading uphill to the right of the flight of locks. Reach the footbridge, turn left and cross, then turn right heading along the opposite side of the canal. Head over another footbridge and down some steps, take a left then a right, past the museum. Take the right fork and upon reaching the public bridleway point outside the Foxton Locks Inn, turn right.

3 Head back along the track toward Foxton. When you reach Main Street, turn left and follow the path downhill, over a canal bridge. Over the bridge, turn left onto North Lane and back to the walk start point.
