Parkland Perfection and River Meanders: Grange Paddocks, Essex

Location: Grange Paddocks, Rye Street, Bishop's Stortford, Essex, CM23 2HH (This postcode takes you directly to the Leisure Centre and park entrance.)

The Walk: A Mix of Recreation and Riverside Tranquility

This suggested walk offers immense flexibility, allowing you to create a route from approximately 1.5 to 3+ miles, combining leisurely park loops with scenic riverside stretches.

  1. Starting from the Leisure Centre Car Park: Begin your walk from the large car park. Head out into the main park area, where you'll find clear paths.

  2. Explore Open Green Spaces: The park features vast, open mown lawns and recreational areas. These are fantastic for well-behaved dogs with excellent recall to enjoy some off-lead running, playing fetch, or simply stretching their legs. Be mindful of any sports activities (football, rugby) taking place and avoid disturbing them.

  3. Riverside Strolls along the Stort: A key highlight is the River Stort, which meanders along one side of the park. Pick up the well-maintained towpath that runs alongside the river (part of the Stort Navigation). This offers a peaceful walk with views of the water, passing narrowboats, and the locks (like Bishop's Stortford Lock, depending on your route). Keep your dog on a lead when on the towpath due to shared use with cyclists and other walkers, and for water safety.

  4. Connecting to Broader Routes: The River Stort towpath allows for extension beyond the park's boundaries if you fancy a longer linear walk, connecting to other sections of the Stort Navigation. You can then simply retrace your steps back to Grange Paddocks.

  5. Park Amenities: The Leisure Centre offers amenities like toilets and a café (check specific dog policies, often dog-friendly outside). There's usually a popular children's play area (dogs are typically not allowed inside fenced-off play areas).

  6. Choose Your Loops: The park's layout, combined with the river towpath, allows for various circular routes. You can do a smaller loop within the main parkland, a loop that includes a section of the river, or extend further along the Stort Navigation before returning.

  7. Return to the Car Park: Complete your chosen loop, bringing you back to your starting point.
