There is usually a dedicated free car park for Wilstone Reservoir, managed by the Canal & River Trust or local wildlife groups, located near the reservoir banks, often accessed from a minor road near Wilstone village or off the B489 in Hertfordshire. This car park provides direct access to the perimeter path and bird hides. It can be small and may fill up at peak birdwatching times or weekends. Explore Wilstone Reservoir in Hertfordshire, the largest of the four Tring Reservoirs, offering a superb waterside walk with excellent birdwatching opportunities and expansive views across the water and surrounding countryside. Located near the village of Wilstone and part of the Tring Reservoirs Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), this Hertfordshire reservoir is managed by the Canal & River Trust and is a haven for wildlife, particularly birds. Wilstone Reservoir is renowned for its large numbers of wintering wildfowl and its importance as a breeding site for various water birds. This Hertfordshire location is a must for birders.

 

A well-maintained, generally flat path encircles much of Wilstone Reservoir, providing an easy and enjoyable circular walk with constant views of the water and the diverse birdlife. There are often bird hides strategically placed for optimal viewing. You can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, watch for a wide variety of ducks, geese, swans, waders, and terns (in summer), and appreciate the open landscape. A circular walk around Wilstone Reservoir is approximately 2.5-3 miles and is largely flat, taking about 1-1.5 hours at a leisurely pace. This can be extended by exploring paths connecting to the other Tring Reservoirs (Startops End, Marsworth, Tringford) or the Grand Union Canal towpath which runs nearby in Hertfordshire.
