A circular dog friendly walk at Chopwell Wood, near Gateshead. This walk is a gentle stroll, on a good surfaced trail, with few hills. The walk incorporates part of the old railway line that used to carry coal from Chopwell and High Spen Collieries to Derwenthaugh Cokeworks.

 

How to get there

From the A694, take Strathmore Road/B6315 through Highfield and head toward Chopwell Wood.

 

Walk

1 From the car park, follow the blue marked route. The most prominent feature of this walk is the old colliery railway line that carried coal. A restored example of the railway wagons can be found where the forest road joins the footpath that now follows the old railway line.
