Starting Point: Main car park for Fforest Fawr, near Castell Coch, Tongwynlais, Cardiff (Postcode: CF15 7JS is often used, but follow signs for Castell Coch or Fforest Fawr car parks).

Approximate Distance:
2.5 - 4 miles (4 - 6.4 km) for a moderate loop, with options for shorter or much longer routes.

Estimated Time: 1.5 - 2.5 hours, depending on the chosen trail and pace.

Terrain:
A varied network of well-defined forest tracks (some surfaced or stone-chipped) and narrower, earthier footpaths. The terrain is undulating with some significant steep climbs and descents, especially if heading to viewpoints or exploring more rugged trails. Can be very muddy and slippery after rain, particularly on natural paths. Tree roots are common.

Dog Considerations:

  • Leads: Fforest Fawr is a fantastic woodland for dogs. Off-lead exercise is common once away from car parks and busy main tracks, provided dogs have good recall and are kept under control. Be mindful of cyclists on shared-use trails and other walkers.
  • Water: Natural streams and puddles may be present, but it's advisable to carry fresh water, especially for longer walks.
  • Wildlife: Deer, squirrels, and various bird species inhabit the forest. Ensure dogs do not chase or disturb wildlife.
  • Dog Bins: Limited within the deeper forest. Usually found at main car park areas. Please be prepared to take dog waste home.
  • Hazards: Steep slopes, uneven paths, tree roots. Some mountain bike trails intersect walking paths – be alert.

Walk Description:

1. From the Car Park: Several car parks provide access. A common starting point is the car park near Castell Coch or the Fforest Fawr / Forest Cafe car park. Pick up a trail map if available or note the waymarked routes.

2. Waymarked Trails: Fforest Fawr has several waymarked trails of varying difficulty and length (e.g., the Sculpture Trail, Sir Henry's Trail, Burges' Way). Following one of these is a good way to explore.

3. Woodland Exploration: The paths will lead you deep into the mixed woodland, with impressive beech trees, oaks, and areas of conifers. Enjoy the dappled sunlight and the sounds of the forest.

4. Viewpoints and Features: Some trails lead to viewpoints offering glimpses across the Taff Gorge or towards Cardiff and the surrounding hills. You might also encounter old quarry workings or the previously mentioned sculptures, depending on your route. The fairytale Castell Coch is a stunning backdrop if your walk takes you near its perimeter.

5. Circular Route: Most waymarked trails are circular, returning you to your starting area. Or, if using an OS map, you can devise your own loop using the extensive network of paths and bridleways.

Highlights:

  • Beautiful, mature mixed woodland with a tranquil atmosphere.
  • A variety of well-marked trails catering to different abilities.
  • Stunning views from certain vantage points.
  • Proximity to the iconic Castell Coch (though castle entry is separate).
  • Rich birdlife and opportunities to spot other woodland wildlife.
  • The vibrant colours, especially during spring (bluebells) and autumn.

Tips for Your Walk:

  • Footwear: Sturdy, waterproof walking boots are highly recommended due to uneven and often muddy conditions.
  • Navigation: While some trails are well-waymarked, an OS map (Explorer 151 - Cardiff & Bridgend) is useful for longer explorations or devising your own routes.
  • Castell Coch: If you wish to visit the castle itself, check opening times and admission fees with Cadw.
  • Cafe: There's often a cafe (Forest Cafe or one near Castell Coch) for refreshments.

Fforest Fawr offers a wonderful woodland escape with routes to suit everyone. Enjoy your exploration!
