Be prepared for a workout! Walking through miles of soft, dry sand in the dunes takes twice as much energy as walking on a solid path. Navigation in the dunes can also be incredibly tricky as the paths constantly shift with the wind—having a GPS or keeping a close eye on your map is essential. The inland return is a mix of much firmer dirt footpaths, farm tracks, and paved lanes.

The Dunes: Penhale Sands is a fantastic, seemingly endless playground for dogs. However, because the dunes are so vast and disorienting, it is crucial to keep your dog within sight so they don't get lost.
-
MoD Land: Notice the red "Danger Area" marked near Penhale Camp on your map. This is an active military training area. You must keep your dog under close control, obey all warning signs, and do not cross any boundary fences or red flags.
-
Livestock & Roads: The inland return crosses active farmland and uses several country lanes, so you will need to put your dog back on the lead for the second half of the walk.
