The terrain for the Dunkery Beacon walk (Devon/Somerset border) is challenging upland moorland. Expect steep, rocky, and uneven paths with loose stones, especially on the main ascent routes. The summit plateau is open heathland with peaty and boggy sections, which can be very wet underfoot. The hill is very exposed to rapidly changing weather. Strong, sturdy, waterproof mountain boots are essential, as are full waterproofs, map, compass/GPS, and emergency supplies for this Devon/Somerset moorland peak.

- Dog Notes:
Climbing Dunkery Beacon on Exmoor (Devon/Somerset) is suitable only for very fit, agile, and experienced hill-walking dogs. The terrain is challenging underfoot. Dogs MUST be kept on leads or under very close and reliable control due to steep drops, unpredictable weather, and the frequent presence of sheep and Exmoor ponies grazing freely on the moorland. During ground-nesting bird season (March-July), keep dogs strictly to paths. This is a very strenuous day for a dog. Ensure your dog is capable and carry plenty of water for them. Not a casual dog walk on this Devon/Somerset summit.
