Dog Considerations:
- Leads: Essential in Corfe Castle village, near roads, and especially where livestock is present (common in the fields around the castle). Even on open hills, it's wise to keep dogs on leads or under very close control to protect wildlife and prevent them from disturbing other walkers or getting into trouble on steep slopes. The Castle itself (National Trust property) allows dogs on short leads in the grounds.
- Livestock: Sheep and cattle frequently graze the fields around Corfe Castle. Ensure your dog does not chase or worry them.
- Stiles: Be prepared to lift your dog over stiles if they cannot manage them independently.
- Water: Bring water for your dog, especially on warmer days.
- Dog Bins: Available in Corfe Castle village. On the wider footpaths, be prepared to carry poo bags until you find a bin.
- Refreshments: Corfe Castle village has several dog-friendly pubs and cafes where you can stop for refreshments after your walk.

Walk Description (General Route Idea):
This circular walk aims to give you varied perspectives of the magnificent Corfe Castle ruins.
- From the National Trust car park, walk towards Corfe Castle village. Before you enter the main square, look for footpath signs leading up towards West Hill (the hill to the west of the castle).
- The ascent up West Hill can be steep in places but is well worth the effort. As you climb, the views of Corfe Castle, dramatically perched on its mound, begin to open up. The path will likely take you along the ridge of West Hill.
- From the top of West Hill, you'll have breathtaking panoramic views of the castle ruins, the village nestled below, the steam railway line, and the Purbeck Hills stretching out towards Swanage and Poole Harbour. This is a fantastic photo opportunity.
- Continue along the footpath, which will eventually lead you down the other side of West Hill, often bringing you out onto a lane or track.
- Your route will then typically involve crossing the valley (perhaps via a lane near the railway line – listen out for steam trains!) and looking for footpaths that ascend East Hill or skirt around its base. Alternatively, for a slightly less strenuous walk, you can take paths that loop around the base of the castle mound on this eastern side, still offering excellent views.
- If ascending East Hill, you'll gain another perspective of the castle, looking back towards West Hill.
- The paths will then guide you back down towards Corfe Castle village. You can explore the charming streets of the village itself, with its stone cottages and historic buildings, perhaps stopping for refreshments.
- Finally, make your way back to the car park.
Highlights:
- Unforgettable, iconic views of Corfe Castle from multiple angles, especially from West Hill and East Hill.
- Walking through the picturesque and historic village of Corfe Castle.
- The chance to see and hear the Swanage Steam Railway.
- Beautiful rolling Purbeck countryside scenery.
- A good workout with some rewarding climbs.
Tips for Your Walk:
- Ordnance Survey Map: Explorer OL15 (Purbeck & South Dorset) is highly recommended for detailed navigation.
- Footwear: Sturdy walking boots with good grip are essential, especially for the hilly sections and if it has been wet.
- Weather: Be prepared for changeable weather; the Purbeck Hills can be exposed.
- National Trust: If you plan to visit the castle itself, check opening times and dog policies (dogs on short leads are usually welcome in the grounds).
- Pubs: The Greyhound Inn, The Castle Inn, and The Fox Inn in Corfe Castle village are generally dog-friendly. It's always best to check current policies.
Enjoy this spectacular walk around one of England's most dramatic castle ruins with your dog!
