Dog Considerations:

  • Leads are ESSENTIAL, especially between March 1st and July 31st due to ground-nesting birds (like the Dartford warbler and nightjar). Even outside this season, it's highly advisable to keep dogs on leads or under very close control to protect wildlife (including reptiles like adders and sand lizards) and prevent them from getting lost in the dense heath.
  • Livestock: Ponies and cattle may be grazing freely to help manage the heathland. Keep a safe distance and ensure your dog does not chase or worry them.
  • Adders: Present on the heath, particularly in warmer months. Keep dogs to the paths to reduce the risk of encounters.
  • Ticks: Common in heathland and grassy areas. Check your dog (and yourself) thoroughly after the walk.
  • Water: Bring your own water for your dog, as natural water sources may be scarce or unsuitable.
  • Dog Bins: Unlikely to be present on the heath itself. Please be prepared to carry all waste, including dog poo bags, back with you to dispose of responsibly.
