Dog Considerations:

  • Leads: Hartshead Pike is a popular viewpoint and can be busy. Dogs should be on leads around the immediate area of the Pike Tower, the car park, and on any paths directly adjacent to roads. On the wider network of public footpaths across surrounding farmland, dogs **must be on leads or under very close control** if livestock (sheep or cattle) are present. On open field paths with no stock and good visibility, well-behaved dogs with excellent recall might have some off-lead time, but always be prepared to re-lead quickly.
  • Water: No natural water sources at the Pike itself. Carry fresh water for your dog, especially if planning a longer walk.
  • Wildlife & Livestock: Farmland birds, potentially hares. Sheep and cattle are common in surrounding fields.
  • Dog Bins: May be available at the Hartshead Pike car park. Unlikely on more rural footpaths.
  • Hazards: The Pike is on high, exposed ground; can be very windy. Steep drops on some sides of the hill away from the main paths. Livestock in fields. Roads nearby.
