Dog Considerations:
- Leads: Formby is extremely popular for dog walking. On the beach, dogs can often enjoy extensive off-lead freedom year-round, provided they are under good control and considerate of other beach users (especially families in summer). Within the pinewoods and squirrel reserve areas (especially the designated Red Squirrel Walks), dogs **should ideally be kept on leads or under very close control** to protect the rare red squirrels and ground-nesting birds, and to prevent them getting lost in the dense woods or disturbing sensitive habitats. Always follow National Trust signage regarding specific on/off-lead zones.
- Water: The sea for paddling! Carry fresh water for drinking, especially as pinewoods and beach can be dehydrating.
- Wildlife: Famous for its Red Squirrel population (best seen in quieter parts of the woods, early or late in the day). Also, natterjack toads, sand lizards, and diverse birdlife in the dunes and woods. It is vital dogs do not chase or disturb any wildlife.
- Dog Bins: Usually available at the main car parks, near beach entrances, and sometimes along main woodland paths.
- Hazards: Tide times (beach can be vast or narrow). Soft sand in dunes. Can be very busy. Red squirrels are wild – do not let dogs chase. Ticks common in woods/dunes.
