Dog Considerations:
- Leads: The Roaches is an area of open access moorland, popular for climbing and walking. Dogs with excellent recall and experience on rocky, uneven terrain might manage off-lead on the main ridge path *away from cliff edges and livestock*. However, due to steep drops, roaming sheep, and the popularity of the area, keeping dogs on leads is often the safest and most responsible option, especially near edges or when passing other walkers/climbers. **Strictly on leads near any livestock.**
- Water: Natural water sources (pools, streams) can be scarce and peaty on the ridge. Carry plenty of fresh water for your dog, especially on warm or strenuous days.
- Wildlife & Livestock: Sheep graze freely across The Roaches and surrounding moorland. Also, upland birds (curlew, skylark, grouse). Ensure dogs do not chase or worry any animals.
- Dog Bins: Very unlikely on the moor itself. Bins *might* be at the main Roaches Gate car park if it has facilities. Expect to take all dog waste home.
- Hazards: Steep, unfenced cliff edges and drops, especially along the western face of The Roaches. Loose rocks, slippery boulders (especially when wet). Deep heather and boggy patches. Adders (March-October). Sheep. Can be very crowded. Sudden weather changes (mist can descend quickly).
- Agility: The rocky terrain and some scrambly sections require dogs to be reasonably agile.
