Starting Point: Public rights of way access points around the Exton Estate, Rutland. There is not one single public car park for the entire estate; access is typically via footpaths from Exton village or surrounding lanes. (Postcode: LE15 8AH is for Exton village).

Approximate Distance: 3 - 6 miles (4.8 - 9.6 km) for a typical circular walk exploring sections of the estate's parkland and surrounding countryside paths.

Estimated Time: 1.5 - 3 hours, depending on the route chosen and terrain.

Walk Description:

1. From Exton Village or Access Point: Begin your walk from Exton village or another suitable public footpath access point that leads onto the estate's network of rights of way.

2. Parkland Paths: Follow public footpaths that traverse the historic parkland, designed by famous landscape architects. Enjoy the views of mature trees, rolling grassland, and potentially glimpses of estate buildings like Fort Henry or the remnants of the old Exton Hall (not generally open to public).

3. Woodland and Farmland: Your route may take you through sections of woodland managed by the estate or across agricultural fields. Stick strictly to marked public rights of way.

4. Fort Henry and Lakes: Some public footpaths offer views towards or around the lakes on the estate, including the area near Fort Henry, a charming Gothic summerhouse on the edge of a lake (access to the structure itself is usually private/by arrangement).

5. Circular Route: Combine different footpaths and bridleways to create a circular walk, returning to your starting point. An OS map is essential for navigating the estate's rights of way.

Highlights:

  • Walking through a beautifully preserved historic English agricultural and parkland estate.
  • Views of mature woodlands, lakes, and rolling Rutland countryside.
  • Potential glimpses of historic estate buildings and follies like Fort Henry.
  • A peaceful and tranquil walking experience (if respecting the working nature of the estate).
  • Abundant wildlife, though dogs must not disturb it.

Tips for Your Walk:

  • OS Map ESSENTIAL: OS Explorer map 234 (Rutland Water) is vital for identifying and staying on public rights of way. The estate is private land.
  • Respect Private Property: Adhere strictly to marked footpaths and bridleways. Do not trespass into private gardens, woods, or farm areas.
  • Estate Activities: Be aware that the estate is a working environment. There may be farming activities or game shoots (especially autumn/winter) taking place. Follow any temporary diversions or safety notices.
  • Exton Village: The village of Exton itself is very picturesque with a lovely green and historic church.
  • No Public Facilities: There are generally no public toilets or cafes directly on the rural footpaths across the estate. Exton village may have a pub.

A walk on the public rights of way across the Exton Estate offers a glimpse into a magnificent piece of Rutland's heritage, best enjoyed with respect for its private and working nature.
