Terrain: A varied and invigorating walk. The paths around Lightwood Reservoir are generally well-defined, a mix of compacted earth and gravel. The ascent to Corbar Cross, however, is a significant climb, typically on natural earth paths that can be rocky, uneven, and very steep in places. Expect paths to be very muddy and prone to puddles, especially after rain or during wetter seasons. Sturdy, comfortable, and waterproof hiking boots with excellent grip are essential for both you and your dog.
Accessibility: Due to the steep climbs to Corbar Cross, uneven and often muddy paths, and potentially rocky sections, this walk is not suitable for those with significant mobility issues or pushchairs for the full loop. It requires a good level of fitness and sure-footedness.- Get Directions:

Important Considerations for Your Walk
-
Lead Etiquette: Dogs MUST be kept on a lead around Lightwood Reservoir, near sensitive wildlife, and whenever livestock are present. On the steep ascent/descent to Corbar Cross, keeping your dog on a lead is highly advisable for safety. Off-lead only at the summit or in clear, safe, open areas away from all hazards and livestock, with excellent recall.
-
Water Safety: Reservoirs contain deep, cold water. Keep your dog away from the water's edge and do not allow them to swim.
-
Mud & Slippery Terrain: Be prepared for significant mud and very slippery paths, especially on the Corbar ascent/descent after rain.
-
Water for Dogs: Bring plenty of fresh water for your dog, especially on this strenuous walk, as there are no public water facilities on the trails.
-
Dog Waste: Please be a responsible dog owner and always clean up after your dog. There are typically no bins once away from residential areas, so be prepared to take all waste home with you. Do not leave bags.
-
Exposure: Corbar Cross is very exposed. Be prepared for strong winds, sun, or rain, and check the forecast before you go.
-
Shared Paths: You might encounter other walkers and runners. Be courteous and share the paths respectfully.
