Dog Considerations:
- Leads: Crompton Moor is open access land, but it is crucial for conservation and safety. **Dogs MUST be kept on leads or under extremely close and reliable control at all times, especially during bird nesting season (March 1st to July 31st)** to protect ground-nesting birds like curlew, lapwing, and skylark. Livestock (sheep, sometimes cattle or ponies) graze freely across the moor – dogs must always be on leads near them. The moorland environment itself has hazards (bogs, old workings).
- Water: Natural water sources like streams or bog pools will be peaty and may not be clean or reliable. **Carry plenty of fresh water for your dog,** especially on longer or warmer moorland walks.
- Wildlife & Livestock: Sheep are very common. Ground-nesting birds are a key feature. Also, other moorland wildlife like hares, voles, birds of prey. Strict control of dogs is vital.
- Dog Bins: Absolutely none on the open moor. You **MUST** take all dog waste home with you, adhering to the Countryside Code and Scottish Outdoor Access Code principles if applicable to access land management.
- Hazards: Very boggy ground (risk of dog getting stuck or very dirty), hidden holes, old quarry workings or mine shafts (can be unfenced and dangerous – keep to known paths), steep slopes, adders in summer, ticks. Sudden weather changes (mist, wind, rain can come in very quickly and reduce visibility to zero). Sheep.
- Stamina & Hardiness: Only suitable for fit dogs accustomed to challenging moorland terrain and potentially adverse weather. Not for all breeds or older/less able dogs.
