The Walk
A circular walk along a river.
Map with thanks to Ordnance Survey.
Walk
1. From the car park, head back to the road and turn left to head over the bridge. Then take a right, heading down the road which runs parallel to the river. When you reach an underground quarry entrance to your left, take the right path into the woods. Follow the path as it heads alongside the river. You will reach a footbridge which will take you across the river. When you reach the road, turn left and pass by the Wainwright's Inn. Once you have passed the pub, take the footpath on your left and walk between the stone walls. At the junction, turn left, and pass the farmhouse and through the gate with the house on your left. Continue on the path and pass through a wooden gate and walk between the two stone walls.
2. At the junction, turn left, crossing over the stone bridge. Use the gate on the left and remain on the stone path following the river and passing by the edge of the BaysBrown Farm Campsite.
3. Pass through a set of kissing gates. The path will head to the left and up towards the farmhouse. Pass by the house, and when you reach a stone barn, turn left to cross a field. Walk alongside the stone wall to your right. As it bends to the right, take the path on the left. Cross over small streams and through a farm gate between a stone wall and cross stepping-stones over a stream. Head downhill, and through a gate. Head on up into the woodland and remain on this path, descending. Pass by a path on your right which goes uphill.
4. Pass through a farmyard, and continue through the farm buildings. Follow the road ahead, ignoring the footpath on your left. Head on uphill and through the woodland. Ignoring the path on your right, pass by a house on your left and ignore the bridleway on your left. Continue to descend between the stone walls. Pass another house on your left, and then ignore the footpath to your right. Pass by a house on your right, and then pass Elterwater Hall. When you reach the end of the road, turn left, and pass some houses on the left. Cross over the stone bridge, and you will be back at the National Trust car park and start point of the walk.
