The terrain on Epsom Downs in Surrey is predominantly open chalk downland. Paths are grassy and can be uneven, rutted (especially on the gallops which are used by horses), and become very slippery when wet or frosty due to the underlying chalk. There are some gentle to moderate slopes across the downs. The area is very exposed to the weather. Some paths around the racecourse itself or leading from car parks may be surfaced. Sturdy footwear is advisable for this Surrey location.
