Upgrade to PLUSStarting Point: Main pay and display car park at the top of the bank in Runswick Bay village (Postcode: TS13 5JF).
Approximate Distance: 1.5 - 3 miles (2.4 - 4.8 km) for a walk exploring the village, beach, and a short section of the Cleveland Way clifftop path.
Estimated Time: 1 - 2 hours, allowing time to explore the steep village, enjoy the beach, and soak in the views.
Walk Description:
1. From the Car Park: Take in the initial view from the clifftop car park before carefully making your way down the steep road or stepped paths that descend into the heart of Runswick Bay's lower village.
2. Explore the Village: Wander through the incredibly picturesque lower village, a charming cluster of red-roofed fishermen's cottages nestled into the cliffside. The lanes are narrow and maze-like, leading eventually to the slipway and beach.
3. Beach Stroll: Enjoy a walk along the beautiful sandy beach of Runswick Bay. At low tide, there's a good expanse of sand. You can walk towards the Hob Holes (caves at the northern end – check tide times and safety if exploring) or simply enjoy the shelter of the bay.
4. Clifftop Path (Optional & with Caution): For stunning views, you can access the Cleveland Way National Trail. Heading south offers a (still challenging) path towards Kettleness, or north towards Staithes. These paths are narrow, uneven, and right on the cliff edge – only suitable for those with a good head for heights and with dogs on very secure, short leads.
5. The Ascent: The walk back up to the car park from the lower village is steep and will get the heart pumping!
Highlights:
- The incredibly picturesque and charming fishing village of Runswick Bay.
- A beautiful, sheltered sandy beach.
- Dramatic coastal cliff scenery.
- Access to the Cleveland Way for stunning (but challenging) clifftop views.
- Fossil hunting opportunities on the beach.
Tips for Your Walk:
- Footwear: Good walking shoes with grip are essential for the steep village paths and potentially muddy clifftop trails.
- Tide Times: Check tide times if planning to spend a lot of time on the beach or explore caves.
- Steepness: Be prepared for very steep gradients when walking between the upper car park and the lower village/beach. It may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.
- Cleveland Way: If venturing onto the Cleveland Way, be extremely cautious of the cliff edges.
- Refreshments: Cafes and a pub are usually available in the lower village (seasonal opening for some).
Runswick Bay is a true coastal gem, offering a memorable (and often steep!) walking experience.
